The class in six stages

Six stages, from the garden gate to the table

How the class at Basiliko Family Tavern unfolds, from the first herbs to the last glass.

Your start time appears when you check dates, and the walk to the river is optional.

  1. 01

    Arrive in Potamia

The class meets at the family tavern in the village, 10 km from Naxos Town. Groups are capped at fifteen, and the instructor teaches in English.

  2. 02

    The garden and the herbs

You collect ingredients directly from the garden and hear about the herbs and aromatic plants that give Naxian cooking its flavours.

  3. 03

    The first dishes

Hands-on cooking of Naxian recipes follows, built on local, fresh ingredients. The instructor shares the small secrets that make each dish work.

  4. 04

    The river and the cheese

If you like, you walk up to the local river with the instructor. You also see how cheese is made, with a local producer.

  5. 05

    Cooking turns to feasting

The lesson shifts into a meal: the dishes you prepared, local wine and some starters, shared with the group.

  6. 06

    The table, with music

Traditional music joins the feast. Several guests also write about Greek dancing and plate smashing afterwards, so wear shoes you can move in.

The island

A farming island, cooked from the garden up

A shaded stone terrace in Ano Potamia with a wooden table, wicker-seated chairs, potted geraniums and a lush garden behind a low wall

The most self-sufficient island in the Cyclades

Naxos is the largest of the Cyclades, and farming and livestock have defined it since antiquity: a twelfth-century geographer wrote of its extensive cattle raising. Today it counts as the most self-sufficient island in the group, which is why a class here begins in a garden rather than a shop.

Cheese, potatoes, honey and kitron

Within Greece, Naxos is known for its Arseniko Naxou cheese, its potatoes, kitron (a local citrus spirit) and honey drawn largely from thyme. Graviera Naxou, made mostly from cow’s milk, carries an EU protected designation of origin.

What the class takes from that

Guests collect ingredients straight from the garden, learn about herbs and aromatic plants from the instructor and watch cheese being made by a local producer. The dishes use fresh local produce, and the class closes with the meal you cooked.

A village, not a resort

The tavern is in Potamia, a traditional village about 10 km from Naxos Town and 15 km from Agia Anna beach. Several visitors who have written about the day describe the farm, its gardens and the family’s history as much as the cooking itself.

Getting ready for Potamia

Before you go to the village

Getting there

The tavern is in Potamia, about 10 km from Naxos Town and 15 km from Agia Anna beach. The class does not include a hotel transfer, so plan your own ride.

Book your ride early

Taxis are hard to find at short notice. Arrange transport as soon as you have chosen a date, and ask the class’s local partner for help if you are stuck.

Group size and language

The class takes a maximum of fifteen guests, and the instructor speaks English. Start times show once you check availability.

Allergies

Give details of any food allergy when you book. That is the one dietary step the class asks for, and no particular diet is promised beyond it.

What to bring

Comfortable shoes, sunglasses, a sun hat and sunscreen. Luggage and large bags are not allowed, so leave them at your hotel.

Dancing shoes

The afternoon can finish with Greek dancing, as several guests write, so choose shoes that cope with both a garden path and a dance floor.

FAQ

What to ask before you book

What exactly am I booking?

A place on a four-hour cooking class at Basiliko Family Tavern in Potamia village. You collect ingredients from the garden, cook Naxian recipes hands-on, and then eat the meal with local wine and some starters. Hotel transfers are not included.

Can the class cater for my diet?

Tell the hosts about any food allergy when you book; that is the one dietary step the class asks for. No vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free or other special menu is promised, so if you eat that way, ask before you commit and rely on it only after you get a clear yes.

How do I get to the tavern?

By your own transport. The village is about 10 km from Naxos Town and 15 km from Agia Anna beach. Taxis are hard to find at the last minute, so line up a ride when you book, and contact the local partner if you need help.

How big is the group and what language is it in?

Up to fifteen people, taught in English. Couples, families and friends all book it, and guests mention making friends with the other travellers at the table.

How long does it last and when does it start?

It runs about four hours. Start times for your date appear once you check availability.

Is there dancing and plate smashing every time?

Several guests write about Greek dancing and plate smashing after the meal, but nothing here promises it for a given group. Treat it as a possible finish, not part of the booking.

Can I cancel, or pay later?

Both are possible. Cancelling up to 24 hours ahead brings a full refund, and you can also keep the date open now and pay nearer the time.

What should I bring, and what stays at the hotel?

Bring comfortable shoes, sunglasses, a sun hat and sunscreen. Luggage and large bags are not allowed at the tavern.
